Selling on Etsy: How to Improve SEO

In this edition of the Pivotal Prints blog, we'll be sharing some tips that will help you to improve the visibility of your Etsy store on major search engines.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the process of optimising your store so that it gets a higher ranking on search engines. This leads to more traffic which in turn results in more conversions.

The first thing is to think carefully about keywords and to do this you need to think like a customer. If YOU were looking online for the products you're selling, what would YOU search for in a search engine? Make sure you use these keywords in your shop title and item titles. You can also use them for tags for items listings, helping them to be found on Etsy searches.

Each shop on Etsy has a title, which appears beneath the name of your shop on its homepage. The title you choose for your shop is an important factor in SEO as it is also your shop's page title, which will appear in search engine results. You only have 55 characters available for your shop title so think carefully. It's advisable to describe briefly the items you sell through some sellers instead use a slogan or tagline. If potential customers are likely to search for you by your business name or personal name, this should be included.

Another way to help boost SEO is how you name the sections of your Etsy shop. Etsy uses these section names to create page titles, which will appear in search engine results. Section names have a limit of 24 characters so you need to be brief and to the point. Use category-style section names and include your keywords.

The titles of each item are used to create page titles for listing pages. As a search engine will only display up to 66 characters for a page title, you need to describe your item clearly and concisely right at the start, remembering to include keywords. Item titles are also factors in Etsy's own search engine algorithms.

The first 160 characters of item descriptions will form the text shown beneath page titles on search engine results pages. Though these characters are all that will be displayed, don't let this limit you. Search engines look at the entire content of a page so use this area to describe your item in detail. Don't forget those keywords!

The usefulness of quality inbound links cannot be underestimated. What you need is for people to be writing about your shop and its listings in addition to linking to your pages on Etsy. This shows a search engine that people are interested in your content, improving your ranking. Link to your shop from any personal blogs and network with other creators to help you create more inbound links.
